Under 16s at Beford School - Photo

Junior VIII v. Bedford School

In our annual away match against Bedford School the U18 IV and the U16 IV both recorded heavy wins. The U18 team, consisting of Rob Christie, Craig Baxter, John Halligan and Tom Corpe, won all four singles matches and then all eight doubles games, including an exciting 16-15, to record a victory by 165-70.

In the adjoining courts Bally Singh, Sam Johnson, Lewis Keates and Adam Ali racked up a similar victory by 157-55.

A memorable day for Tom and Adam, playing their first competitive match against another school, and for Craig it was his 17th birthday!

Due to illness we had a reduced presence at this year's competition. Anthony Goodwin, Jeremy Stubbs and Chris Davey participated but no silverware this year!

DMF VI v. Cambridge University (a)

Thursday, November 28, 2013, Cambridge

A DMF VI consisting of Stuart & Anthony, Rob Christie & Brian, David Johnson & Jai Singh beat their Cambridge counterparts by 176-165.

After a full set of Doubles, with each pair playing each other opposong pair, Derby Moor led by 12 points, Stuart & Anthony having won all their matches at 1st pair, Rob & Brian having held their own in 3 out of 4 matches, and David & Jai contributing 41 points to the cause.

In the three games of Singles, played after the Doubles, Rob Christie scored a resounding win, while Stuart and Anthony recorded honourable losses against the Cambridge captain, Jack Malde, and the British Number 8, Ed Kay, respectively. Cambridge clawed back just one point in the process.

Also played for Cambridge: Lawrence Cook, Olly Layton, James Pinder and Aurelien Gueroult.

Playing as the RFA, Brian Kirk, Stuart Kirby, Richard Christie and Rob Christie played Stuart Endersby, Mark Kitely, Phil Atkinson and Chris Ryan and won 104 - 86 at Bedford Modern.

Derby Moor pair wins plate at Eastern Region National Singles Qualifiers

Bob Dolby took John Halligan, Jai Singh and Bally Singh, to the Eastern Region National Singles Qualifying tournament to get experience of playing adults on the new Cambridge University courts. After they had played their first match (with John Halligan playing the British Number 8) all three were put into the Plate competition for first round losers, where John and Jai beat all the adults and ended up playing each other in the final. John Halligan won 15-13 after a dour battle. Both are now playing the best fives they have ever played.

National Winchester U18 Schools Tournament

Six players from Derby Moor Juniors competed at Winchester: Jai Singh, Craig Baxter, Matt Blunden, John Halligan, Rob Christie and Rob Whitehorn. Rob and Rob reached the semi-final of the main competition, losing to the runners-up from St. Paul's School. Craig and Matt narrowly missed reaching the plate final by one point.

John (U16) and Jai (U17) won the Plate competition for 1st and 2nd round losers. In the process they beat Winchester II, Radley II, Marlborough I and in the final Radley I. The final was a high quality affair, with a ten-minute tussle at 7-7, then again at 8-8, until John and Jai broke the deadlock to win 15-9. All their opponents were older than them. Jai is developing into a very solid partner to John, who has something of Max Frost's power about him; they work well together.

Midlands Eton Competition

Saturday and Sunday, November 2/3, 2013, Repton, Derbyshire

Lewis Keates, Sam Johnson, Richard Christie, Chris Davey and Emily O'Mally entered this competition at Repton. Richard and Chris won the Festival Plate.

Anthony Goodwin, Max Frost, Jimmy Goodwin and Rob Christie won the Plate at the Owers Competition. Anthony, Max and Jimmy are all old boys of Derby Moor Community Sports College and Rob is currently in the upper sixth form.

New Cambridge Courts are Completed

Stuart Kirby, Lewis Keates, John Halligan and Rob Whitehorn travelled to Cambridge University to play on their new courts. They had the honour of being the first to use the three courts and played four games of doubles and four of singles in order to judge if the courts were acceptable. There had been concerns over the flatness and grip of the floors and roughness of the walls but after some remedial work and checks they were judged to be excellent and "very handsome".

10th Derby Moor Invitation Doubles

Fourteen pairs competed this year. Anthony Goodwin and Bob Sandie won the main competition beating Jay Gravatt and Rob Christie in the final. Richard Christie and Jai Singh won the Plate; Hamish Buchanan and Craig Baxter won the Festival Plate. Dick Warner and Robert Whitehorn won the third place play-off.

Alec Taylor-Durant, Callum Boyle, Sam Johnson and Lewis Keates were set to play Denstone but last minute illness meant that Denstone were two players down and the Denstone coach (Anthony Goodwin) and the DMF coach (Stuart Kirby) were drafted in to fill the gaps and Lewis played for Denstone. DMF narrowly won.

Stuart Kirby, Richard Christie, Max Frost & Anthony Goodwin lost 68-126 versus the Alleyn Old Boys, who included Hamish Buchanan, Bruce Hanton & Inigo Ackland.

National Schools Fives Championships

Friday, April 5, 2013, St. Paul's

At the National Schools Fives championships at St. Paul's Matt Blunden and Robert Whitehorn won the National U16 Doubles. In the final Matt & Robert beat the pair from St. Paul's 12-11, 12-11.

Robert Whitehorn also won the National U16 Singles title the same day, beating the West of England Schools champion from Winchester College 11-8, 11-9.

Jai Singh and Craig Baxter were runners-up in the U16 Plate Doubles competition. Craig was also runner-up last year (a year young) with Matt Blunden.

Bally Singh did very well a year young, reaching the semi-final of the U16 Singles 2nd Plate. Bally and his partner John Halligan had some good results in the pool section, in both singles and doubles.

Rob Christie played, singles only, in the U18 section - getting experience for next year when he will have a doubles partner in his age group.

Midlands School Championship

Robert Whitehorn won the U18 Singles, beating the Bedford School Number One in the final. Robert is actually under 16. Robert & Rob Christie (U17) teamed up to win the Doubles, which was played against Bedford II.

In the U15 competitions John Halligan was runner-up in both the Singles (losing to the Rugby School Number One) and the Doubles, where he was partnered by Bally Singh. The winners were Rugby I.

Sam Johnson & Lewis Keates (Derby Moor II) won the U15 Doubles Plate.

Other competitors were Craig Baxter (semi-finalist in the Singles), Jai Singh, Matt Blunden and David Johnson in the U18s. Hasan Rehman and Adam Ali played in the U15s, their first experience of tournament play.

Junior 1st IV v. Sedbergh (h)

16th March 2013, Denstone

We played the Sedbergh School 1st IV on tour at Denstone. Big victories by Stuart Kirby and Mike Baxter gave Derby Moor a lead of 9 points after the singles, but Sedbergh came back in the doubles, particularly against a very rusty-looking Rob Christie and Lawrence Taylor, to win the match by 101-82.

Rob Christie & Craig Baxter and John Halligan & Lawrence Taylor lost 62-122. Only Rob had any success in the Singles, losing 10-12 to the Rugby Number One. Rob & Craig won 3 of their four doubles but John & Lawrence were outpowered in all games by older opponents.

Brian Kirk & Richard Christie, Max Frost & Anthony Goodwin competed. Brian & Richard lost 10-12, 10-12 to Kennerley and R. Wyatt-Haines. Max & Anthony went out to winners Ellison & Minta, then won the Doubles Plate, beating the 1st pair from sedbergh School.
