Jeremy and Will Ellison win President's Cup - Photo

President's Cup

Jeremy Stubbs won playing with the country's top-ranked doubles player Will Ellison. In the final they beat Dan Grant and Keith Kennerley. Jeremy becomes DerbyMoorFives' third player in 4 years to win the President's Cup, after Clive Butler (2010) and Rob Grey (2009), both with John Minta. Brian Kirk also competed, drawn to partner Andy Pringle.


Junior IV v. Denstone

A DMF Junior IV of Ashley Timney & Lawrence Taylor, John Halligan & Bally Singh beat a Denstone IV coached by Anthony Goodwin by 148-62 at Denstone.

They won six of the eight Singles and then all of their five Doubles.

The Junior 1st IV, consisting of Rob Christie, Craig Baxter, Jai Singh and Lawrence Taylor, did well in losing to their much older, U18 opponents by 67-137, while the U15 IV of John Halligan, Bally Singh, Sam Johnson and Lewis Keates overwhelmed their less experienced opponents by 148-14.

Overall score: DMF 215; Bedford School 151.


Junior VIII v. Oundle School

Sunday, December 2, 2012, Oundle

A Junior 1st IV of Rob Christie, Craig Baxter, Ashley Timney and Lawrence Taylor won 125-58, losing just three games narrowly out of 12.

The Junior 2nd IV of John Halligan, David Johnson, Sam Johnson and Lewis Keates won a close match 97-88. Sam & Lewis held their own while John and David built up winning scores at 1st pair. The final score was 222-146.

Next match versus Bedford School (a) on December 8th. The opposition will be tougher!

Scores: Richard Christie & Brian Kirk lost to Phil Atkinson & Chris Ryan 12-15, 14-16; beat Mark Kiteley & Ian Corby 15-11, 15-2.

Stuart Kirby & Jonny Lee beat Atkinson & Ryan 15-11, 15-9; beat Kiteley & Corby 15-4, 15-2.

Match Result: DMT beat Old BMS 116-70


DMF v. Cambridge University

Richard Christie, Rob Christie, Craig Baxter and Sam Johnson were 44-41 up after the Singles, then increased their lead by 10 points in the Doubles. The highlight was the 14-16,14-16 match lost by Rob & Craig against Robert Mathias & Wilson Lau. Will Sloper also played for Cambridge, while both Sam and David Johnson both guested for them. The final score was 143-130 to DMF.

Winchester Fives Schools Doubles

Sunday, November 11, 2012

Aged U16 and playing in an open competition, Robert Whitehorm & Matt Blunden had to give way to Winchester III in the deciding match of the Plate competition. In the main competition they had beaten St. Paul's III 15-11, 16-14 (coming back from 6-14!) and then lost to Winchester II.

Rob Christie & Craig Baxter drew runners-up St. Paul's I in the opening match and then went into the Plate, where they ended up with a victory over Radley.


Midlands Eton Fives Tournament

Brian Kirk & Richard Christie, Stuart Kirby (& Ralph Morgan) competed but no silverware!

The main event of note was when Stuart dislocated his elbow jumping over the wall onto the grass below to retrieve the ball. A visit to A&E followed with no fives for several weeks after .... and then only gently!

Mike Baxter and Jay Gravatt won beating Richard Christie & Bob Sandie in the final. Jimmy Goodwin & Jonathan Lee won the 3rd place play-off against Stuart Kirby & John Hawke. Anthony Goodwin & Paul McIntyre won the Plate by beating Robert Whitehorn and Charles Robinson.

Stuart Kirby won the Singles Plate, beating Angus Hanton 15-2 in the final. He nearly played Richard Christie who lost narrowly 13-15 to Hanton in the semi-final. Brian Kirk was runner-up in the Doubles Plate final, partnering Keith Kennerley. Jeremy Stubbs also represented Derby Moor at these championships.


National Club Knock-out

Having beaten the Halifax White Rose Club at home to go through to the quarter-finals in London, a team of Stuart Kirby & Max Frost, Richard Christie & Luke Thomson beat the Wessex Club by 93-91 before losing the semi-final to the Manchester Y Club by 125-73.

National Schools

Monday, April 2, 2012, St. Paul's

Max Frost and Mike Baxter (seeded 3) reached the final of the U18 National Schools Doubles by beating St. Paul's III in the q/final and the second seeds, St. Paul's II, in the semi. They lost the final to the favorites St. Paul's I by 4-11, 7-11. Max had earlier reached the last 8 of the Singles.


Other successes were Robert Whitehorn & Rob Christie (seeded 3) reaching the semi-final of the Colts (U16) Doubles, and Matt Blunden & Craig Baxter reaching the final of the Colts Doubles Plate, which they lost 12-15 to a pair a year older than them.

DMF reached the last 8 in the National Club Knock-out competition after a home victory by 133-98 against the White Rose Club from Halifax. Stuart Kirby and Richard Christie, Max Frost and Jimmy Goodwin (deputising for Mike Baxter) won two of the four Singles, then five of the eight Doubles to come home comfortably against strong opposition that included multiple national champion Neil Roberts. Next opponents, in London, the Wessex Club.

National Winchester Doubles

Sunday, March 18, 2012, Sedburgh

Brian Kirk and Richard Christie reached the Plat Final. Beaten in the First Round by Hamish Buchanan & James Marshall, Brian & Richard won their pool in the Plate and a semi-final against a Sedbergh schoolboy pair, but lost 12-15 to Lidiard & Lawry, master and pupil at Sedbergh, in the Final.

1st ever RFA v. DMF fixture, moved from the day before. Lost 68-121. Richard Christie & Mike Baxter had close tussles with Tim Widdop & Tony Burrows, then with Bob Sandie & Rob Ross, while Rob Christie & Robert Whitehorn found the going rather hard playing against adults. Craig Baxter filled in for Tony Burrows at the turn.

Tour to Tonbridge

On their weekend tour to Tonbridge the DMF Junior IV of Rob Christie, Robert Whitehorn, Matt Blunden and Craig Baxter beat the Tonbridge U15 IV by 156 points to 79. They won three of the four singles to establish a lead of 56-35, then won seven of the eight doubles.

On the adjacent Winchester Fives courts the Senior IV of Stuart Kirby, Richard Christie, Brian Kirk and Clive Butler tied with the Old Tonbridgians 90-90.

A team of Stuart Kirby, Richard Christie, Jimmy Goodwin and Mike Baxter took on a powerful Jesters IV consisting of Charlie Brooks, Dan Tristao, Gareth Price and Mark Yates in a first ever fixture of its kind, played at Littleover. Just 7 points separated the sides after the Singles, where Richard Christie recorded our one win. In the Doubles Max Frost had to sub for Mark Yates, who twisted an ankle early on. The scores in the Doubles were 89-114 to the Jesters. Charlie Brooks said he had never played in a match with so many drop shots! The final score was 116-148 to the Jesters.

Anthony Goodwin & Max Frost beat Old Paulines Aquilina & Tilston in the final of the Doubles Plate competition at Oundle. Anthony was also runner-up in the Singles Plate the day before.

North West Open Doubles

For the third time this season Max and Jay reached the final of the Doubles Plate at a regional Senior event, but this time they came up against multiple National Doubles winners Neil Roberts and John Beswick who combined tremendous experience with knowledge of the courts. Richard Christie & Rob Christie, Max Frost & Jay Gravatt, Stuart Kirby & Ady Lee also competed.

DMF/RFA v. Cambridge University

Lost 98-162, playing as the RFA. Max Frost, Anthony Goodwin, Mike Baxter and Jimmy Goodwin were 28-52 behind after the Singles, despite Anthony's excellent win at Nr 2 against Cambridge captain Elliott Malone by 15-7. In the Doubles Brian Kirk teamed up with Jimmy for all 4 games; Max (with an increasingly bruised hand) and Anthony played two games together against Kay & Malone; and Mike joined Anthony for the final two games against Malde & Lane, which they won 15-13, 15-7.

U18 IV v. Rugby 129-73

Victory in this first ever U18 match against Rugby School (away). Max Frost and Mike Baxter won all ten of their Singles and Doubles by 67-23. Jimmy Goodwin and Rob Christie won 62-40 giving an overall score of 129-73. They enjoyed the rigatoni bolognese and a doughnut afterwards!

We sent 8 players to take part in the U16 Singles and Doubles, all but one of them young by 1-3 years. Robert Whitehorn and Rob Christie reached the semi-finals of the U16 Singles; Matt Blunden & Craig Baxter lost the U16 Plate final 9-12, 12-11, 9-11.
